ENGLISH
The Course will be divided into five sections.
- Comprehension: Detailed study of the five language types and answering Section A questions and Section B functional writing.
- Composition: Essay writing techniques including detailed Introductions and Conclusions.
- Single Text:: Thorough analysis of Hamlet including Themes, Imagery and Characters.
- Comparative Study: Overview of Planning Stage and Writing Techniques. Includes approaches to Film Study.
- Poetry: Prescribed poets such as Boland, Dickinson, Kavanagh, Rich, Wordsworth and Yeats discussed including Methodology for Unseen Poetry.
FRENCH
The course will consist of the following components each day.
Session 1 (1 hour): - Comprehensions. A considerable amount of comprehensions varying in difficulty will be gone through and explained by the teacher and undertaken by the students. Particular emphasis will be placed on the acquisition of techniques in reading comprehensions.
Session 2 (1 hour): - Grammar and Writing Skills. Required components of the writing section e.g. formal and informal letters will be dealt with in detail. Relevant grammar revision will be ongoing throughout the course.
Session 3 (1 hour): - Preparation for Oral and Aural Examination.
Between the Oral (25%) and the Aural (20%) these represent 45% of the total marks in Leaving Certificate French for an Honours Student. Particular emphasis is therefore put on the acquisition of oral and aural proficiency in this session. Students will be expected to actively participate in this session, will be frequently questioned and tested and will be given a brief oral examination on the final day.
GAEILGE
This course will be divided into three sections:
Section A: Essays and Comprehension. This will include reading passages and answering questions on comprehension. The vocabulary and layout of essays will be covered and sample essays will be provided and analysed. Each student will be required to write one essays, which will be corrected.
Section B: Prose, Poetry and History of Literature. Prose and Poetry will be analysed and students will be provided with a comprehensive vocabulary, which will enable them to approach this section of the paper with confidence. This will include both the theme and type of the poem or story. History of Irish literature will be covered as it applies to poem or story being studied.
Section C Preparation for Oral Examinations. Topics included will be: Home, School , Pastimes, Sport ,Holidays, Professions, Travel ,Health, Environment, Media, Politics: social issues such as drugs, violence and crime. The Irish language, its future, TG4 and topics which will be newsworthy at the time will also be covered. Students will be expected to speak at this session and will be given a brief oral examination on the final day.
MATHEMATICS (H)
(Students are expected to bring Log Tables, a calculator and a copy of past Leaving Certificate Honours Mathematics papers)
The emphasis in Mathematics will be on consolidating firmly the material normally done in 5th Year in Honours Mathematics. This will give the student a very solid preparation for 6th Year and for the Leaving Certificate examination. In all, eight Leaving Certificate examination questions will be covered. Students understanding of the topics undertaken will be of utmost importance and they will be given repeated practise in examination questions. The topics covered will be selected from the following:
- Differential Calculus (2 questions Paper 1)
- Theory and Equations (2 questions Paper 1)
- Co-ordinate geometry of the line and Linear Transformations (1 question Paper2)
- Co-ordinate geometry of the circle. (1 question Paper 2)
- Trigonometry (2 questions Paper2)
CHEMISTRY
The course will provide an in-depth study of the following topics:
- Atomic Structure
- The Mole and Stoichiometry
- Titrations (Acid & Base, Redox)
- Organic Chemistry
- Thermochemistry
Concise notes will be provided for each topics and emphasis will be placed on how to answer examination type questions.
PHYSICS
The course will be divided into four sections:
Section A: Mechanics
Section B: Electrostatics
Section C: Heat
Practical work is an essential part of physics and will receive due emphasis in the course.
Past examination questions will be analysed and sample answers provided.
DAY AND RESIDENTIAL PUPILS
Students who wish to attend the Summer Intensive Revision Courses may be day or residential pupils.
DAY PUPILS:
Day pupils are expected to report each day at Limerick Tutorial College at 8.55am (8.40 am on the first day). Punctuality is essential as classes will begin on time and lateness will not be tolerated. Classes finish at 5.00pm but pupils will be expected to do two hours study each night. This study will involve doing homework and can be done at home or at Limerick Tutorial College.
RESIDENTIAL PUPILS:
Students will be expected to arrive on the evening prior to the beginning of each course at Courtbrack Student Accommodation on the Dock Road. Each student will have his or her own single room in a self -contained student block. There will be a resident warden in this block each night. The price quoted includes breakfast each morning, a full lunch and an evening meal. All bed-linen is included in cost. There is a student common room, tennis court and a full self-service laundry facility available at the student residence. Transport from the hostel to LTC and back will be supplied twice daily and is included in the cost. Residential students must arrive on Sunday evening at 9.00 pm.
Residential students are required to do 2 hours study each evening under strict supervision. This will involve mainly homework.

ABOUT LIMERICK TUTORIAL COLLEGE
Limerick Tutorial College has been established for twenty-one years in Limerick City and is a story of unqualified success from year one. This is because of a total and unrelenting commitment to success by all members of staff. In the initial year tutoring at the weekends for students having difficulties with subjects at second level was undertaken. This quickly developed into running Christmas and Easter Revision Courses for Junior and Leaving Certificate students.
